History of the Town Library

The Town Library of Pomigliano d’Arco is situated at Palazzo dell’Orologio, in Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
The construction of the building goes back to the end of the 18th century. It seems that its construction is due to the fulfilment of a vow to Saint Rocco, in occasion of such an epidemic, maybe the pestilence of 1656. In fact, Saint Rocco seems to have an anti-epidemic patronage. So at the beginning the building was supposed to be a church, but it was neither completed nor consecrated.
In 1818, the structure was turned into a public bake house.
Later, in 1844, the part which had to be the church was pulled down and, instead of it, the existing Tower was built. A big clock, which was put on the front of the Tower, gave the name to it.
In 1984-85 the building was renovated and so it was ready to contain the first group of books of the Town Library, which was definitively and officially established on 20th March 1990 with deliberation number 82 by the Municipal Council. Besides, the Regulation for the administration of the Library was approved and the Librarian Council was designated.
In 1992, the family De Falco, on the last wishes of their relative Luigi De Falco, gave more than 2.600 volumes to the Library.
In 1996 the Librarian Council sensed the necessity to renew the Regulation for the Administration of the Library. So it proposed to the Municipal Council to approve the new Regulation of the librarian service included in 33 articles subdivided in 5 items. In this way, with deliberation number 156 of 27th December 1996, the Municipal Council abrogated the last Regulation of the Town Library.
In 1999, the local government acquired Palazzo Montanino, adjoining to Palazzo dell’Orologio, and today it is part of this one.
From July 2000 to April 2002 the library temporary closed to the users to be renovated and enlarged.
After these works, Palazzo dell’Orologio is extended on three levels now (in fact another floor has been added):

  • on the ground floor there are the porter’s lodge/secretariat, the classrooms for the lessons of the degree course in “Tourism for cultural treasures” of the University Institute Suor Orsola Benincasa, the pre-existent Great Hall and a large courtyard;
  • on the first floor there are the multimedial room, a room for lessons and seminars and a large space for exhibitions;
  • the second floor is made up of the big reading-room where 6.000 volumes of the librarian patrimony take place, the office of the Library Responsible, the office of the net administrator of the structure (LAN) and a new, wonderful Great Hall with more than 100 seats.

The reopening of the Library goes back to the ceremony of 8th April 2002, in which the mayor of Pomigliano d’Arco, Michele Caiazzo, the alderman for the Educational Town, Maria Tufano, and the director of the Library of the Theological Section of Naples, Francesco Russo, took part.
During this ceremony many important things were exposed: the projects to create specialized sections, the general lines of the Library and, above all, the acquisition of the precious librarian patrimony of the lawyer Nicola Esposito, made up of more than 45.000 volumes.

At the moment the Town Library is so constituted:

FONDO LUIGI DE FALCO
It was given to the Town Library by the heirs in 1992, on the last wishes of the owner and it is still very interesting. This collection consists in about 2600 volumes, among which a large importance is given to Parthenopean authors, with a section entirely dedicated to works by Vittorio Imbriani and Alessandro Poerio, who are renowned men of letters deeply linked to Pomigliano d’Arco.

LOCAL SECTION
It is a section entirely dedicated to the history of our town and includes studies on Pomigliano d’Arco, mainly historical and artistic, as well as memories of common and renowned characters.

NEAPOLITAN SECTIONThe Neapolitan section, certainly richer than the local one, is consecrated to the history of Naples and documents the culture of Naples and of the South of Italy, keeping the memory in its bibliographical, iconographical and documentary collections.
The original kernel of the collection, coming from the pre-existent librarian found (volumes, periodicals, miscellanies) has been enriched with other works during these years, because of donations and acquisitions.

FONDO NICOLA ESPOSITO (not yet available)
The Town Library will be soon integrated with other volumes; in fact, thanks to the acquisition of the precious librarian patrimony of the lawyer Nicola Esposito, other 50.000 volumes will pour in it. The collection is made up of various works from Renaissance to today: encyclopaedias, dictionaries, monographies pamphlets, periodicals and unpublished manuscripts
